Whole House Humidifier in Columbus: Getting Winter Humidity Right


By the middle of January, you know the feeling. You get zapped by the door handle, the trim around the doors has hairline cracks in it, and you wake up with a sore throat every morning. The house feels chilly even though the thermostat has not moved.

EPA says to keep indoor relative humidity under 60 percent. The ideal range is 30 to 50 percent (EPA, Mold Course Chapter 2). That is the year-round target.

In an Ohio winter, though, that ceiling keeps moving on you. The colder it gets outside, the colder the glass in your windows gets, and cold glass starts pulling moisture out of the room long before the rest of the house does. Now read that against our weather. A typical January night here sits near 22°F. So roughly 35 percent is your practical ceiling. On the few nights we near zero, the dial should go down, not up.

Most homeowners set it once and leave it. That is the most common mistake we see.

Bypass, fan-powered, or steam

There are three common types. They are not interchangeable. The right one depends on your ducts, your water, and how much moisture the house needs.

What matters here is how the unit works, not whose name is on it. Bypass and fan-powered models add moisture by evaporation, so what they can put into the house rises and falls with how warm and how dry the air moving past them happens to be. A steam unit makes its own moisture instead, which means the temperature of your supply air is beside the point.

The maintenance nobody does

When a humidifier quits, it rarely makes a scene about it. There are two ways it usually goes.

The first is the pad. Water around Columbus is hard, and over a season or two the minerals blind the pad so completely that air passes straight through and picks up almost nothing. Everything sounds right from the basement. The unit hums, the valve opens, and the house is still dry.
