In the filter aisle, everything is sold as a number, and bigger is pitched as better. An air filter is not really a one-size purchase, though. Look at where the jumps land. Nothing below MERV 11 is even rated for the 0.30 to 1.0 micron band, and that band covers most of what people have in mind when they say smoke or fine dust.
What the EPA Recommends for Homes
