Furnace Won’t Turn On? What to Check First in a Columbus Home
The first real cold night in Central Ohio sorts out which furnaces are ready and which are not. You bump the thermostat to 70, wait, and get nothing but room-temperature air from the registers. When your furnace won’t turn on, start with thermostat settings and power supply
Check thermostat settings first, and check them properly. Confirm it’s set to Heat, that the setpoint is a few degrees above room temperature, and that the display is actually lit. Battery-powered thermostats die quietly, and a dead screen looks identical to a dead furnace from the hallway. If your thermostat is a smart model, confirm it still shows a heating call rather than a Wi-Fi error. The thermostat wiring and setup has to match the equipment for that call to reach the control board.
Then check three power supply points in order. The circuit breaker for the furnace can trip and still look almost normal, so push it firmly off and back on. There’s also a wall switch near the furnace that looks like a light switch, and it gets flipped by anyone who happens to be carrying storage boxes past it. Finally, the blower door has an interlock switch behind it. The blower access panel has to be installed for power to reach the furnace control, transformer, inducer, blower motor, igniter and gas valve (58MVP series troubleshooting guide, PDF). A door that’s back on but not fully seated leaves you with a furnace that acts completely dead.
Dirty filters are one of the most common causes
An air filter gets treated as an efficiency item, and it is, but dirty filters also starve airflow until the high-limit switch opens and shuts the burners down. Restricted airflow is one of the most common causes of a furnace that won’t start on a cold morning. ENERGY STAR’s guidance is to check the filter monthly and replace or clean it when it’s dirty, because restricted airflow raises energy costs and damages equipment (ENERGY STAR HVAC maintenance), and it can cause the air handler to shut down (ENERGY STAR Homeowner Manual, PDF).
If your furnace runs for a few minutes, quits, then tries again later, airflow is the first thing to rule out. Pull the filter and hold it up to a light. If you can’t see light through it, replace it and give the system twenty minutes before you judge anything else. Also walk the house and open every supply register, including the ones in bedrooms you keep closed.

Read the flashing light before you call
Most furnaces built in the last twenty-five years tell you what’s wrong through a status LED on the control board, visible through the sight glass on the blower door. Manufacturer guides tie each pattern to a specific fault. A limit circuit lockout gets logged when the limit or flame rollout switch stays open longer than three minutes, or trips ten times in a row. An ignition lockout follows the same three-hour auto reset, which is why a furnace can look fixed at noon and be dead again by evening. Codes vary by model, so read the label inside your blower door instead of trusting a chart you found online. Older furnaces with a standing pilot light have no code at all, and a pilot that has gone out looks exactly like a dead furnace from upstairs.
Write down the code pattern before you call. Count short flashes and long flashes separately, note whether the inducer motor spins up at all, and mention both when you call in to book the appointment. That one detail often decides which parts ride along on the truck.

High-efficiency furnaces add a drain to the list
If your furnace has PVC pipe running out of it, it’s a condensing unit and it produces water each time it fires. That water leaves through a trap and drain line, and manufacturers protect the equipment with an overflow pressure switch on the condensate path. When the trap sludges up over a summer of air conditioning, the switch opens and the furnace refuses to start, with no other symptom in the house.
You can look for water pooling under or beside the cabinet and check whether a small clear line is disconnected. Clearing the trap and verifying the switch is technician work, since the same switch protects the heat exchanger from a flooded secondary coil.
Stop and call when you smell gas or hear the alarm
Two situations end the DIY portion immediately. If you smell gas, leave the house first and call from outside. If a carbon monoxide alarm sounds, get everyone out and call for help before anyone reopens the furnace. CO exposure sends more than 100,000 people to US emergency departments in an average year and kills over 400 through unintentional non-fire poisoning (CDC). Frequently asked questions
Why won’t my furnace turn on when the thermostat display works fine? A lit thermostat only proves the thermostat has power, not that the furnace does.
